Goldfish Basics

Goldfish Basics: Tank Size
A goldfish's tank is it's entire world. If you think of it that way, it might change your mind about buying one of those commercial five gallon tanks that people try to cram six goldfish into.
Bad!!
Don't be fooled by the "pretty" tall and narrow tanks that are in hotels. These tanks have very little surface area, have little swimming space, and in my opinion, they are not as enjoyable to look at. These are not recommended at all, no matter how many gallons they are.
Good!!

The tanks that are the best for goldfish are long tanks. They are beautiful, are easy for the fish to swim around in, have lots of surface area, and they are recommended by lots of goldfish hobbyists.

When you hear me say surface area, I mean the open top of the aquarium where gas is exchanged. Gas exchange is very important for an aquarium because this is where the carbon dioxide leaves the tank and oxygen enters. Goldfish need lots of oxygen. This backs up the reasons that owning a tall an skinny aquarium is not a good idea.

Fancy goldfish need at least fifteen gallons of space each, and single tails (including Wakin goldfish, and Jikin goldfish) need at least forty gallons each.

It is very important to have the recommended gallons for each fish because they take up oxygen and space. Again, it is their entire world.

More coming soon...
